the typical pastor's wife
>> November 20, 2008
I've often heard PWs of all ages, of all different gifts, personalities and lifestyles and interests say that they're "not the typical pastor's wife." I suppose on some level, no one wants to be the "typical" anything. But that got me thinking... what is the typical pastor's wife?
What elements define the stereotypical pastor's wife? How do you fit into that description? In what ways do you break the mold?

My idea of the pastor's wife growing up was that pastor's wife in Footloose ... you know, ugly dress, no make-up and hair in a bun. I don't actually know anyone in ministry like that ... but that was the "typical" in my head.

For me, a typical pastor's wife was someone who was obsessed with church stuff, lived at church, played the piano and did children's ministry but was so bland as a person that I did not think I would want to be her friend.
Nowadays, though I'm none of those things I listed, I wonder if people think of me as an empty shell ministry supporter?
i always thought pw's had to play piano, teach children's classes, and either be a nurse or a teacher.
as i am neither a nurse OR a teacher, don't teach kids' classes and play the piano quite badly - i guess i broke my own stereotype.... :)
